A fugitive armed robber was caught after stepping outside his hideout to purchase the new ‘Call Of Duty’ game in Martineau Way, Birmingham city centre, on January 13.
Clint Butler, 37, who initially gave officials a fake name when asked why he was not at home during the pandemic, kicked one officer in the groin and punched another in the face before he was eventually restrained and admitted to being on the run.
Butler escaped from Spring Hill last November while serving a 17-year jail term, which is due to end in 2024. He was sentenced for various offences such as robbery and firearms offences.
Superintendent Nick Rowe, from West Midlands Police, said: “Quite why he decided to risk being returned to prison by making the idiotic decision to come into town during lockdown with a friend to buy a video game will remain a bit of a mystery.”
Butler has been sentenced to 13 months for escaping from prison and six months consecutively for assaulting the officers.
