Former Rangers and Scotland manager Walter Smith is recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery.

“Rangers Football Club can confirm Walter Smith had an operation on Monday and he is currently recovering in hospital, his family have requested privacy at this time,” Rangers Football Club wrote on Twitter.

Smith first became Rangers boss in 1991 and took over the job from Graeme Souness, who moved to Liverpool.

While at Ibrox, the 73-year-old won 21 trophies over two eras as a manager.

Smith left Rangers after Celtic won the league title in 1998 and became the manager of Everton one month later.
