Netflix said it has begun testing a feature that asks viewers if they share a household with the account owner, and will crack down on the practice of sharing passwords.
Some consumers reported bumping into a screen with the accompanying message, “If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.”
Some Netflix users allegedly received messages asking them to confirm that they live with the account holder by typing in a code sent via an SMS or email.
In a statement, Netflix said, “This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so.”
Netflix has previously said in 2016 that it was comfortable with users sharing their passwords, with CEO Reed Hastings saying there were “no plans” to clamp down on the practice.
