Rugby reporter Sonja McLaughlan broke down in tears after receiving online abuse following her coverage of England’s Six Nations defeat by Wales on Saturday.

McLaughlan interviewed England captain Owen Farrell and head coach Eddie Jones as well as Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones after England’s 40-24 defeat.

Some fans claimed McLaughlan was attempting to encourage the pair to criticise the French referee, and they expressed their discontent on social media.

“Toxic, embarrassing, disgraceful, appalling. Just some of the feedback I’ve had. Thanks for using @ sign so it’s all hit home. Now imagine getting inundated with abuse for doing your job. In my car crying. Hope you’re happy,” said McLaughlan on Twitter in response to the comments.

In support of her, the BBC issued a statement: “BBC Sport strongly condemns the online abuse experienced by Sonja McLaughlan after the Wales v England match. Sonja has long been a key member of our Six Nations team and she absolutely has our full support.”
