A fundraising page set up by Reclaim These Streets in honour of Sarah Everard has raised more than £300,000.
Reclaim These Streets decided to raise money for women’s charities after police forbid them to hold vigils due to safety and legality concerns.
Commander Catherine Roper, the Met’s chief of community services said: “We take no joy in this event being cancelled, but it is the right thing to do given the real and present threat of Covid-19.”
Grace Jessup, from Reclaim These Street, hopes that the fundraiser will mark a change as the movement “has been born out of collective grief for Sarah”.
Reclaim These Streets aims to highlight the dangers women face in everyday life and “come together in memory of Sarah”.
