It took 48 long, agonising years, but Sunderland’s wait for a win at Wembley has finally come to an end with Sunday’s 1-0 2021 Papa John’s victory against Tranmere.
Sunderland finally broke their Wembley bad luck when Lynden Gooch scored midway through the second half to secure the first win at the national stadium since 1973.
A quality moment proved pivotal in the 57th minute when Aiden McGeady ripped open the Tranmere defence with a through ball and gave Gooch his chance.
Meanwhile, Tranmere’s best chance of the first half came in the 15th minute when Grant Leadbitter’s effort to clear Danny Lloyd’s shot was parried away by Sunderland keeper Lee Burge.
The club’s boss Lee Johnson said: “When we watch the highlights back in 10 years’ time, it will not be the sloppy passes. It will be the moment of magic from McGeady and Gooch’s finish.”
